1. Padma Awards: Pg 13

Relevance: Though it’s not possible to remember all of them but one should know about the Padma Vibhushan winners and other high profile and popular people especially sports persons. They can be asked in PT as well as 2-3 markers in mains.

Clue: Some of the important names are KG Subhramanyam, Mario MMiranda, Bhupen Hazarika, Dr. Kantilal Sancheti, T V Rajeswar, Jatin Das, MS Gopalakrishnan, TV Gopalakrishnan, N Vittal, Shahid Parvez Khan, Devi Prasad Shetty, Ronen Sen, Vanraj bhatia, Priya Paul, Swati Piramal, Zaffar Iqbal, Jhuluan Goswami, Limba Ram, Ravi Chaturvedi, B. Muthuraman, M V Subbiah etc. Visit their wiki pages, this will help  in remembering them.

2. Immunization: Pg 4

Relevance: Health, Malnutrition etc.

Clue: Know about the expanded programme of immunization(1978), universal immunization programme(1985), BCG, DPT, OPV etc. Last year HPV vaccine trials generated a controversy, know the issues involved in that.

3. Indo Pak: Pg10

Just keep the Lahore Declaration (1999),  2007 agreement on reducing risks from nuclear accidents between the two neigbours and the Ottawa dialogue in your repository. Read about India’s nuclear doctrine in case you don’t know before.

4. Health : Pg 11

Clue: Know about Srinath Reddy Committee, Health related DPSPs, Universal declaration of Human Rights, CEDAW and the international covenant on Economic, Cultural and Social Rights. Just like R&D, we need to escalate the spending on health sector close to 3% of GDP.

5. Judge the judges: Pg 11

Relevance: Judicial Corruption

Clue: Do you know the procedure to appoint and remove the judges. There is a phrase used by the author– Trinity of the Judges Cases. Do you know all the three cases, I could recall SCARA 1993, Reappointment of judges 1998 but I’m not sure about the third. Read any standard polity book on evolution of collegium system in India. The article gives insight into the issue and carries the debate over what could be the probable composition of much talked about National Judicial Commission. Nothing much to write. Also know about Judicial Standard and Accountability bill, Judges Enquiry act 1968, Keshvananda Bharti case and Art 124 and 217.

6. Independents: Pg12

Relevance: A landmark judgement especially important for Public Administration people.

Clue: One must be thorough with the provisions in 10th Schedule and anti defection law.

7. Science and Technology: Pg17

Relevance: Just know about Magnetic Soap, Archaeopteryx.

Clue: Do you know where are the Galapagos Islands, why they are so famous, which country administers it? Also prepare a general literature on Stem Cells, what are they, their types, source, uses (Regenrative medicine), ethical issues involved etc. Refer any coaching notes or standard text. Surf “Project Snow leopard” in case you haven’t done before.

8. GST: Pg19

Relevance: Part of the proposed Tax reforms in country.

Clue: Know about all the indirect taxes like CENVAT, excise, issues involved in the implementation of GST, Empowered group of ministers on GST. Read economic survey 2011. It may be the right time to revise your polity notes on Finance Commission. Also go through the major recommendations of 13th Finance Commission headed by Vijay Kelkar.

9. India- Thailand: Pg19

Relevance: Prepare Indo-Thailand Relations.

Clue: Do you know about Red Shirts and Yellow shirts, Thaksin Sinawatra, Indo Thai FTA, ASEAN FTA, India’s Look East Policy, Thai Combodia conflict etc.

10. Other potential 2 markers: G Madhwan Nair (Frontpage), TAPI (pg 12), Navdeep Singh 😀 (Pg 13), Gallantry Awards (Pg 13), Jallikattu (Pg15).
