The Hindu: 30th Jan 2012, Monday

1. Australian open: (Frontpage, Pg17)

Relevance: Important from pre point of view. Remember the winners and the runner ups- Joko, Nadal, Victoria Azarenka, Paes, Stapenak, Kuznetsova, Zvonareva, Sharapova, Bryan Brothers. Their nationalities are as important as their names.

Clue: Take a moment out and read about the Grand Slams. Also know about the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup, Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup, Roland Garros, Open Era, ATP world tour,  Rod Laver, John Mcnroe, Bjon Borg, Jimmy Connors, Boris Becker, Andre Agassi, Stephi Graff, Billie Jean King. They all are the greats of the game.

2. Google’s new privacy policy: Frontpage

Relevance: The ongoing debate over Internet regulation. A good read, though not much to write.

3. Literature: Pg2

Clue: Indian cinema is celebrating its centenary year. Prepare history of cinema in India, Cinematography Act 1952, Central board of film certification, The film and television institute of India, National Film Archive of India, National Film Development Corporation, Films Division, Directorate of film festivals etc. Read Spectrum culture book and wiki.

Also read about the National Book Trust (1957).

4. The revolution: Pg8

Relevance: The ongoing debate over Internet regulation. A good read, though not much to write. Know about the important findings of Google Transparency Report.

5. Right Step: Pg8

Relevance: Important from PT point of view, I guess. Just glance through the map of Eastern Europe, it’s so confusing.

Clue: Know about the internal structure of EU- EU commission, EU parliament, EU council, Lisbon treaty, Maastricht treaty, Treaty of rome etc. Last fortnight Catherine Ashton was in India.

6. Devas: Pg10

Relevance: Just brush up your knowledge on the whole debate.

Clue: Know about the role of PMO in finalising the deal, GSAT6, 6A, S, C, Ku band, Tranponders, DTH etc.

7. Kazhakhstan: Pg9

Clue: What do you know about this central Asian country? Look for Astana, Almaty, Nursultan Nazarbayev, ONGC and Satpayev Oil fields, Civil Nuclear deal, military cooperation etc.

8. India signs tax treaty: Pg11

Relevance: whole black money issue.

Clue: Know about the five pronged strategy adopted by GOI in tackling Black money and the recent steps taken in that direction.

9. When they: Pg12 and If India: Pg13

Relevance: A good read on Indian Economy, though not much to write.

10. Signalling: Pg13

Relevance: Recent reduction in CRR by RBI.The article carries few important economy concepts for eg if Repo rate is x reverse repo is generally kept at x-1 and marginial standing facility is at x+1, lowering repo has wider impact on checking the liquidity than lowering CRR (dont know why?). Also know about the crowding effect and open market operations.

11. Other potential 2 markers: CGV Vishwast, Sahyog-Kaijin-X1, Malabar(pg7), P5+1, Marc Grossman(Pg12).

I found only these items useful in Monday’s paper. If you could spot some thing more which is relevant to CSE please feel free to post in comments section.
