1. TERI’s: Pg7

Relevance: I’m not sure if it’s an important event in a run up to Rio+20 but no doubt the “Sustainable development” itself is a hot topic in the UPSC town.

Clue: Know about TERI (Do you know it’s not a govt funded institute!), Mr. RK Pachauri, Brundtland Commission, Our common future, Stockholm Conference(1972), Earth Summit 1992, Johannesburg Declaration 2002, Agenda 21, Rio+5 etc. These all encompasses the efforts made by the international community to ensure equity and sustainable development.

2. Watch this : Pg8,

Relevance: Antrix deal

Clue: Note the names of all committees appointed over the issue like BN Suresh, Chaturvedi-Narsimha and Pratush Sinha.

3. Museums : Pg8

Relevance: Most of the museums in our country are in dire stage. Lack of adequate funds and the poor management are prime reasons.

Clue: Know about the important museums in India like Indian Museum (Kolkata), National Museum (Delhi), Salarjung Museum (Hyderabad), Allahabad Museum (Allahabad), National Council of Science Museums, Asiatic Society etc.

4. Jairam: Pg10

Relevance: A good read on the Naxal issue. When he was appointed as the Rural development minister there were huge expectations, I think now the time has come for Jairam Ramesh to prove them right. Saranda Action Plan and its approach is something to be kept in mind.

5. Tension in Bangladesh: Pg13

Relevance: The major objective of the Indian foreign policy in South Asia are: ensuring peace, stability and development in the region.

Clue: Know about the Caretaker system in Bangladesh. Do you know it was the 15th Amendment of Bangladesh’s constitution which re-established the principles of Nationalism, Socialism, Secularism and Democracy in the country. Read more on the 5th, 8th, 13th and 15th amendments of Bangladesh constitution, Gen Ershad, Zia ur Rehman etc.

6. Turning the illiteracy: Pg14

Relevance: A good read on the state of illiteracy in India. Know about the concept of “Gender Budgeting” floated by Ministry of Social justice and Empowerment.

7. iPS cells: Pg10

Relevance: Stem cells is an important topic, prepare a general literature on it by referring to any coaching notes.

8. Other potential 2 markers: Dileep Padgaonkar (Frontpage), Great Indian bustard (Pg7), PURA (pg8), Teesta Setalwad(Pg11), Drones (Pg13), Raul castro (Pg13).
