The Hindu: 14th Feb 2012, Tuesday

1. A project: Pg9

Relevance:Know about the concept, benefits and drawbacks of such initiatives, interlinking of rivers v/s micro water management like check dams, Ralegaonsiddhi project etc, National Water development agency, Financial cost, Rehabilitation cost and the Environment cost of the projects etc.

Also know about some of the important link projects like Ken Betwa link, Par Tapi Narmada PTN link, Damanganga- Pinjal link, Godavari Krishna link, Ghaghar- Gandak link etc. Read Ch 27: water Resources IYB for more details.

2. Lessons from the Durban: Pg10

Relevance: An all encompassing article on the current status of climate change talks. Focus on key issues like Common but differentiated responsibility concept, equity concept, commitments made under Bali Action Plan, broad consensus achieved in last 3 COPs i.e Copenhagen, Cancun and Durban.

3. Giving BRICS: Pg11

Relevance: BRICS nations account for a fourth of global GDP and represent over 40% of the total population. This fact itself signifies the need for the consensus building among the member countries over the variety of issues ranging from the ways to combat recessionary waves, protectionist tendencies, financial integration, WTO Doha issues, climate change etc.

Overall a good read provided you know the basic issues and a bit about BRICS before.

4.  US delivers: Pg14

Relevance: Violation of human rights by the Srilankan forces during the Fourth Eelam War has caused much uproar in the international community. Know about the Darusman reoprt, Human rights watch report, Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Committee report etc.

5. IMS: a reform: Pg15

Relevance: Know about the proposed key reforms in the IMF.

Also last year 2 major reports on the financial crisis were published : IMF’s watchdog committee report and the USA’s Financial Enquiry Commission report. The reports pointed out the lack of regulatory mechanisms in USA and the wrong assumptions made by IMF regarding the vulnerability of the USA markets as the prominent reasons for the Global financial Crisis.

Also look for the Brettonwood system, reasons for its collapse in 1971, Nixon shock, Brettonwood II, Angelidas Commission, Pecora Commission etc.

6. India, Pakistan: Pg17

Relevance: Indo-Pak trade relations. Mark the important facts like opening of second gate and an integrated customer’s post, duty waiver on 75 Pak products, MFN status, reviewed negative list etc.

7. WTO ruling: Pg18

Relevance: A landmark decision by WTO. Do you know WTO contains an exclusive dispute settlement mechanism apart from trade facilitating ones under the Marrakech Agrrement(1995) signed after the Uruguay Round of talks.

Clue: I suggest you to prepare a general literature on WTO.

8. Other potential 2 markers and tidbits: Akhlaq Mohammad Khan, Janpith Award (Frontpage), Muthuswami Dikshitar and Trinity of Carnatic music (Pg15), Faiz( pg 15), Adele(Pg 22).

I found only these items useful in Tuesday’s paper. If you could spot some thing more which is relevant to CSE please feel free to post in comments section.
