The Hindu: 6th March 2012, Tuesday

1. No more at sea: Pg10

Relevance: The growing Chinese influence in the Indian ocean has left Indian govt with frayed nerves. At the same time, South China disputes, assertive US’s policy in South east Asia, Malabar exercises, emerging India-Japan-US axis, US-Sri Lanka tensions, instability in Maldives etc have further complicated the region. In such a scenario, any sort of maritime cooperation with China is a welcome development having deeper strategic implications.

2. The final countdown in Nepal: Pg6

Relevance: Know about the constitutional deadlock created in the Nepal. One can skip reading entire article provided he/she knows the basic issues involved like integration of maoist combatants in army, proposed rehabilitation package, five point deal signed in 2011, historic Seven party alliance signed in 2005, question on federal structure, people like Prachanda, Madhav Kumar Nepal, Baburam Bhattarai, Jhalanath Kanal, GP Koirala etc. Also know about the major political parties like CPN(M), CPN(UML), NC, Madhesis etc.and the role India can play in ensuring peace and stability in the Himalayan nation.

3. Needed more HUNGAMA: Pg7

Relevance: An excellent article written on the issue of Malnutrition. We have to prioritize our efforts to check this menace considering its socio-economical ramifications. Availability of the food alone is not an issue at hand, need of the hour is an integrated approach taking into the account various facets of development like health, nutrition, sanitation, neo natal care, education, food habits, decentralized decision making etc.Having said that I think in the current system Anganwadi centres can be modeled to play the pivotal role.

4. India urging Sri Lanka: Pg8

Relevance: A relatively new issue between both the neighbors.

5. Iceland ex premier: Pg11

Relevance: These sort of mechanisms reflect accountability in the system in a very true sense. I wish we could have similar arrangements in India. Know about the Landsdomur courts, Althing, Geir Haarde trial etc.

6. Centre bans cotton: Pg12

Relevance: The issue of regulating the export quota of cotton was in news throughout the year.

Clue: Just go through the major cotton producing areas, development of cotton industry in India and its export pricing mechanism. For first two sub topics you can refer NCERT Geography.

7. Other potential 2 markers and tidbits: Mirage 2000(Frontpage), Jaipur foot and PK Sethi(Pg3), Justice Ibrahim Kalifulla(Pg9), Wangari Mathai(Pg8), Presidential Election in Russia(Pg11), Jerry Yang and David Filo(Yahoo, Pg18), NALSA Act 1987(Pg18), Differences between Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakaram, Janani Suraksha Yojana and Indira Gandhi Matritva Sahyog Yojana(Pg18).

I found only these items useful in Tuesday’s paper. If you could spot some thing more which is relevant to CSE please feel free to post in comments section.
