The Hindu: 12th March 2012, Monday

1. Cotton exports: Frontpage

Relevance: The issue of regulating the export quota of cotton was in news throughout the year.

Clue: Just go through the major cotton producing areas, development of cotton industry in India and its export pricing mechanism. For first two sub topics you can refer NCERT Geography.

2. A railway mission: Pg12

Relevance: Know about the proposed reforms in the railways like modern signalling, checking unmanned crossings, replacing over-aged assets, Kakodar committee( targeted reduction in accidents by implementing Anti Collision devices etc), HR Khanna committe( Special railway safety fund), Rakesh Mohan committee( organisational changes in the Railway Board) recommendations etc.

Also know the recent steps taken for the railway modernization like introduction of Anti collision devices, GPS based fog devices, increase in the number of Adarsh stations, Go India smart card etc.

3. Don’t give up: Pg12

Relevance: A good read though nothing new to write.

4. A simple proposal: Pg13

Relevance: There are significant drawbacks in our approach towards ensuring Food security. For a country with over 200 million undernourished citizens, food security can’t be achieved unless a very basic principle of distributive justice is ensured. It’s this big leap ‘from food security to food justice’ which we have to make to combat the twin violence of hunger and injustice.

Know about the Food security bill in general, NAC’s recommendations, concept of priority and general households etc.

Do you know the India’s current ranking in the Global Hunger Index?

5. A refill exercise: Pg16

Relevance: A good read though nothing new to know.

6. UGC sets: PG20

Relevance: Improving the gross enrolment ratio must be at the top priority for the govt. especially when we are carrying the aim of developing 500 million skilled force by 2022.

7. Other potential 2 markers and tidbits: Miyagi(Frontpage), Bandipur, Nagarhole, Dandeli, Bhadra, B R Hills tiger reserves(Pg9), Lin Dan(Pg17), Sant Gadge Baba Swachta Abhiyan(Pg20).

I found only these items useful in Monday’s paper. If you could spot some thing more which is relevant to CSE please feel free to post in comments section.
