The Hindu: 23rd March 2012, Friday

1. India votes for: Frontpage and A wake up call for Colombo: Pg10

Relevance: Finally,India have voted against Sri lanka in UNHRC meet at Geneva. Although some last moment amendments were brought in the resolution on India’s insistence to make it a ‘non intrusive’ one but still it has tied a knot in the relations with our ‘younger brother’ as once declared by the President Rajpaksha.

Frankly speaking I have not understood the logic completely. Why India didn’t insist on giving some more time to Sri lanka to implement all the measures suggested by LLRC?

2. Clinical establishments: Pg9

Relevance: A much needed legislation which will improve the access to emergency health services especially in a country with health insurance coverage as low as 10%.

Clue: Prepare your general literature on problems and prospectus of health insurance in India. Some beginning points are :reason for health insurance, large unorganised sector, existing models like Voluntary health insurance, social health insurance, community based health insurance, schemes like Rashtiya Swastha bima yojana, Janashree bima yojana, some state schemes like Din Dayal Antodhya Upchaar Yojana(MP),ESI etc.

3. Titanic 3D:Pg9

Clue: Look for RMS Titanic, its route from Southampton to Newyork, white star line, Olympic class ocean liners etc.

4. Bulk of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan: Pg9

Relevance: A good read on the operational problems faced in implementing schemes like SSA.

Clue: Take a moment out and read about the different initiatives undertaken by the GOI in the education sector like Saakshar Bharat, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan ( Education Guarantee Scheme, Alternative and Innovative Education are its 2 major components), Mid day meal scheme (1995) under the National Programme of Nutritional support to primary education NP-NSPE, Mahila Samakhya Scheme, NPEGEL, KGBV, Bharat Shiksha kosh, Prarambhik Shiksha Kosh, Jan Shiksha Sansthan, National Policy on Education 1986, Programme of Action 1992, National Curriculum Framework 2005, Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan etc. Refer India Year Book for the details.

5. Soldiers oust Mali: Pg14

Relevance: Important for 5 marker type of questions in mains.

Clue: Know about the nation of Mali in general, President Toure,Tuaregs, neighboring countries like Niger, Chad, Burkina Faso, Central African Rep. etc.

Do you know about the Bamako Convention?

6. Convene meeting: Pg20

Relevance: Know about the various initiatives taken in this direction like the Ganga Action plan I , GAP II, National River conservation directorate, National Ganga river basin authority, role of Central and state pollution control board etc.

GAP was first introduced in 80s yet it failed to cast any impact, it was primarily because the older approach was town centric, end of pipe one focussing only on the high polluting areas while NGRBA (2009) considered whole basin as a unit of development. Moreover, last year $ 1 billion aid was provided by the World Bank to the NGRBA under its Clean Ganga project which applied a holistic approach based on the four pillars of waste water treatment, industrial pollution control, solid waste management and the river front management.

7. Other potential 2 markers and tidbits: AA Manvalan and Saraswati Samman(Pg9), Murugappa Vellayan, Jatin Das, Suresh Hariram Advani(Pg13), Dahanu Coast guard Station(Pg20)

I found only these items useful in Friday’s paper. If you could spot some thing more which is relevant to CSE please feel free to post in comments section.
