The Hindu: 31st March 2012, Saturday

1. Rajya Sabha poll: Frontpage

Clue: It may be trivial but take out a moment and read about the Rajya Sabha in general like election process of Rajya Sabha, PR STV system, share of states and their order eg UP(31)>Maharashtra(19)>TN(18)=AP(18), MM Punchi commission’s recommendation on status of Rajya Sabha, comparison of Rajya Sabha with Senate(2 members from each state) in USA, qualification of membership, special powers under Art 312, 249 etc.

2. Lok Sabha passes judicial: Pg13

Relevance: It’s a landmark legislation aimed at removing corruption from the Judiciary by setting up standards and smoothing the process of removal of Judges. Its most important features are first, the setting up of a complaint mechanism which also includes citizens and second, the provision of minor punishments which could be given by the Oversight Committee. This should help:

3. Swami and friends: Pg20

Clue: 2013 will be the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.

Swamiji believed in the religion of ‘Vedanta’ and considered ‘service of man’ as the true ‘service of God’. The two objectives he wanted to achieve as a loyal disciple of Ramkrishna Paramhansa were first, the creation of a monastic order devoted to the spiritual perfection and the second, spreading the message of ‘Doctrine of social service’. For the fulfillment of first objective he established Ramkrishna Math at Belur and second one is accomplished by setting up of Ramkrishna Mission which is also headquartered at Belur.

Know about his principles, Chicago conference, work done by Mission across South east Asia, Vedanta and Upanishads, Kanyakumari Ashram etc.

4. Other potential 2 markers and tidbits: Microalgae biodiesel and field of Phycology(Pg4), Human Safaris and Jarawas(Pg11), Participatory Notes mechanism(Pg15), Alex Ferguson(Pg17).

I found only these items useful in Saturday’s paper. If you could spot some thing more which is relevant to CSE please feel free to post in comments section.

    Aman, Please tell about the
MM Punchi commission’s recommendation on status of Rajya Sabha.
    Also please tell the source.

    • amaniitg says:

Over the debate on relevance of Rajya Sabha MM Punchi favored the continuance of Rajya Sabha as the second chamber of legislature…
…it also recommended to redesign it so that it truly represents the say of states for eg committees of RS should discuss the policied concerning two or more states
…it also recommended equal share for each state irrespective of population (just like senate in USA) to check the centralisation tendencies n adjust with the reality of coalition politics
..it also criticized the stand taken by SC in the Kuldip Nayyar case where in SC considered RS as a mere chamber representing states at federal level…infact it can play a hell lot of role in sorting out centre-state disputes if redesigned well

    • amaniitg says:
